Success of the Hub

Benefits/Statistics
  • Mentees gain social and academic skills and greater self-confidence while having fun with their college-aged mentors. In addition, OSU mentors gain opportunities to give back and expand skills for future life work.

  • Annually, about 75% of the young people have made gains in half or more of the protective factors that lead to expanded skills and improved behaviors.

  • A survey of the OSU mentors showed that 60% of mentors felt they gained increased skills in working with children and increased their own maturity. Stephanie Sparrow Hughes, The Mentoring Center’s Hub Manager, says, “We have seen real growth in kids and the mentors develop hands-on skills as well as learning the importance of community service.”

  • Annually 350-430 mentors are matched with children in schools near the OSU campus.

  • Buckeye Hub sites continue to expand and have increased from seven to 13.

  • Mentors also work with Latino and other immigrant young people who need mentors to befriend them and help ease their transition to a new country.

  • An independent evaluation done in 2006 by an OSU graduate course in Policy and Leadership found high levels of satisfaction with mentor training provided by The Mentoring Center
    • 97% of trained mentors indicated the Hub met their expectations, 91% gained knowledge about mentoring, and 79% felt prepared to mentor.

Testimonials:

"I would like the Mentoring Center to know how much they have helped YouthBuild Columbus Community School.  The YouthBuild students look forward to working with mentors every week.  They have been a wonderful assist to our students and their success.  Last year all of our seniors were able to work with a tutor from Buckeye Mentoring Hub.  Our 2010 graduates are now successful members of the community.  We have graduates at Akron University, Columbus State Community College, and serving in AmeriCorps NCCC for ten months.  Without the Mentoring Center we would have not been able to successfully prepare our students for graduation and post secondary education."
Emily Uline Olmstead, Community Service Director at YouthBuild Columbus Community School

"Thank you so much for selecting me for the mentor award.  I think it's so cool that there is an organization like The Mentoring Center that connects college students to younger students in their community.  [My mentees] have been just as much a part of my education as I have been to theirs. And since I am not from Columbus I would not have been able to find Holt Crossing Elementary School without an organization like the Buckeye Mentoring Hub." - Rachel Heinzman
Outstanding OSU Mentor 2008

“While it is a great feeling to give back to my community, it is even more rewarding to see the direct impact mentoring has on individual lives, mentors and mentees alike. To be able to be a positive role model in a child's life, who may not have one otherwise, is a feeling unparalleled for everyone involved. My experience mentoring has inspired me to dedicate the rest of my life to helping and educating others, who I hope in turn will continue to pay forward the wonderful gift of mentoring in the future.” --Michael Larson, OSU Outstanding Mentor 2007

“I have truly enjoyed my mentoring experience. I asked if I could increase my hours starting next quarter. I'd like to turn my involvement into a touchstone for my master's research project. It has sparked a new interest in working in urban school settings.”

“[A big reward for me has been] just watching the students progress from week to week and how much change can happen just in that little time. Also to see the goals the students set for themselves and watching or helping them achieve those goals.”

“My mentee is much more confident with math problems.”

“I enjoyed everything! I love helping students who are clearly intelligent break down the language barriers that impede them reaching their academic potential.”

”Being able to help the kids is rewarding.”

”I enjoy the relationship I have with my mentee. She respects and looks up to me. It's nice to see the perspective of a younger generation. She is opening up more to me.

“My mentee is so refreshing to me around. She is very school-oriented and gets renewed satisfaction from learning and solving problems. I feel that my mentee and I really have developed a special bond!”

“She is setting new goals for herself and working toward them. We are working on her spelling and she is improving.

“It's a great feeling knowing you're making a positive impact in their lives.”
