Working with Communities In Schools as lead agency, The Mentoring Center trains East High School ninth graders who mentor and tutor students at East Pilgrim Elementary, using Time Warner’s Time to Read program.
With East operating at Arcadia while their school is being renovated, East students ride a school bus each week to meet with their grade school “buddies.” “Training has been a hallmark of increased impact in the program, says East Pilgrim Principal Carol Wheat. “The training provided by The Mentoring Center has meant that the program has gone even more smoothly this year.
From the beginning, our kids have responded with enthusiasm and hard work. Adds Jean Arthur of Time Warner Cable, “The Mentoring Center has enhanced our corporate tutoring program; I have been especially impressed by the effectiveness of mentee training which they offer in addition to mentor training.” And the outcomes are exciting--Attendance is greatly improved at both schools on mentoring days—and reading skills have also improved.
